This year in math we used Connected Math 2 for our text book. It is made of 8 units consisting of; Prime time, Bits and pieces 1, 2, and 3, Shapes & Designs, Covering & Surrounding, How likely is it? and Data about Us. There are about 4 to 5 chapters in each book and 3 to 4 parts in each section. We would to 1 to 2 sections of each chapter a day. At the end of the day we would be assigned problems from A.C.E. (Applications, Connections, and Extensions). The next day we would go over the work that we had done the day before and then go over our home work. After we are finished correcting our home work we would be assigned class work to do in groups, pairs, or individually. On Friday we do not usually have home work but on occasion we do.
Every thing that we work on in class or at home we record all of our assignments in the section of our folder called Note book check list under the section called Assignments. There are four sections in our note book the fist section is Classwork. That is were we put all of the assignments in class from the book. The next section of our note book is called Homework. The home work section is we put all of the assignments that we work on at home. The next section is called, Assessments were we put all of our tests and reflections. The last section in our note book is called, Reference. That is were we put all of the reference sheets that we get in class.
In each book we have vocabulary. In each chapter we have a set of vocabulary words. After each chapter we copy down our vocabulary words in our vocabulary note books. At the end of each book after the unit test our teacher collects the note books and grades us on them. Our vocabulary notebooks have 78 pages; there are 3 pages for each letter in the alphabet. We have about 5 or 6 vocabulary words for each chapter.
One major thing in the beginning of each book there are focus questions. Focus questions help you focus on the things you will learn in the book. For example in the beggining of Shapes and Designs it asks you what property of a hexagon makes it good for the cells of a honeycomb. Even though they are asking you questions they don’t intend for an answers because they are asking you to think about the questions as you go through the book. For example when they ask you in the begging of shapes and designs they ask you why some shapes occur more often then other shapes in art rug designs and quilt designs they want you to think about why some shapes occur more than others in real life. One major thing in the beginning of each book there are focus questions because they help you think about the chapter.
Another major thing at the beginning of the book is Mathematical Highlights. In the beginning of the book it tells you what you will be learning about and what you will ask yourself questions about the problem in the chapter. It tells you to recognize important facts while you’re reading the chapter. It also tells you to solve the problems and then discuss them with the class. These questions help you think in depth about what you will learn about in the coming unit. Mathematical highlights are a major thing in our book.
My favorite book in connected math was Shapes and Designs. It was my favorite book because I love geometry. My favorite part of shapes and designs was the unit project because I loved letting the teachers know that I had learned every thing in the book to the fullest extent. I liked learning about how we can see geometry in every day life. Some polygons that we can see in everyday life are triangles, squares, rectangles, pentagons, hexagons and octagons. For examples a triangle can be seen on a bridge, a rectangle can be seen on the side of a building, a pentagon can be seen at the U.S. military base the pentagon, a hexagon can be seen in a honey comb and an octagon can be seen as a stop sign. My favorite book in connected math was shapes and designs.
